Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration of the internal material characteristics of a very thick product such as the strength and toughness by adding a very small amt. of Nb to a steel for a pressure vessel having a specified compsn. CONSTITUTION:The compsn. of a steel for a pressure vessel is composed of, by weight, <=0.25% C, <=0.35% Si, 1.3-1.5% Mn, 0.7-1% Ni, <=0.25% Cr, 0.45-0.6% Mo, <=0.01% V, 0.01-0.04% Nb, 0.012-0.025% Al, 70-120ppm N and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. Since the very small amt. of Nb produces carbide grain refining and stabilizing effects and is effective in preventing the coarsening of the matrix grains, the deterioration of the toughness of the steel is inhibited. The steel is especially useful for a very thick pressure vessel.
