Abstract
PURPOSE:To efficiently carry out polymerization of an olefin, by using a transition metallic catalyst prepared by supporting a titanium halide supported on a magnesium halide carrier obtained by a specific method together with an organometallic compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A Grignard reagent expressed by the formula (R<1> is hydrocarbon residue; X<1> is Br or I; X<2> is Cl; L is a positive number of <=1 which is not 0) is treated with a chlorinating agent, such as aluminum chloride, to provide a carrier expressed by the formula MgXL<1>X2-L<2>, which is then treated with a polyalkylene carbonate (preferably polyethylene carbonate). After or simultaneously with the treatment, a titanium halide is supported to afford a transition metal catalyst. A catalyst consisting of the resultant transition metallic catalyst and an organometallic compound (preferably an organoaluminum compound) of group I or III of the periodic table is then used to polymerize an olefin.
