Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a base oil for an internal combustion engine lubricating oil which is excellent in the high-temp. detergency, rubber sealing property, and low-temp. fluidity, by mixing an alpha-olefin with a polyol ester each having a particular property in a predetermined weight ratio. CONSTITUTION:70-95wt.% poly-alpha-olefin (A) having a kinetic viscosity of 2-20cSt at 100 deg.C (e.g., polydecene-1 or polyoctene-1) is mixed with 30-5wt.% polyol ester (B) having a kinetic viscosity of 2-20cSt at 100 deg.C and a hydroxyl value of 100mgKOH/g or less to prepare a base oil for an internal combustion engine lubricating oil. Component (B) is prepd. by reacting a polyhydric alcohol (e.g., neopentyl glycol) with a carboxylic acid (e.g., stearic acid). A lubricating oil compsn. for an internal combustion engine can be prepd. by adding zinc dithiophosphate, a detergent-dispersant, and a viscosity index improver to the aforesaid base oil.
