Abstract
PURPOSE:To readily obtain the titled compound useful as a monomer for polyester such as polymer liquid crystal in high yield and purity and one process, by subjecting novel (4-hydroxyphenyl)-cyclohexene carboxylic acids to reduction reaction as a raw material. CONSTITUTION:Cyclohexanone carboxylic acids expressed by formula I (R is H or lower alkyl) is reacted with phenol in the presence of an acid catalyst to give a bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-cyclohexane carboxylic acid expressed by formula II which is a novel compound, which is then subjected to heat decomposition reaction in the presence of a dehydrogenating catalyst and hydrogen acceptor to afford (4-hydroxyphenyl)-cyclohexanone carboxylic acids expressed by formula III which is a novel compound, which is then subjected to reduction reaction such as hydrogen reduction using H2 in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst such as Pd/C in a solvent such as methanol at 0-100 deg.C and <=5kg/cm<2> H2 pressure to provide the aimed compound expressed by formula IV.
