Abstract

PURPOSE:To remove fixed pattern noise at the time of starting and stopping vertical scanning pulse (VSP) by arranging the starting and stopping positions of a VSP respectively in a horizontal blanking period in a self-scanning type solid state image pickup device. CONSTITUTION:Signal charge obtained in photodetecting elements 11 is read out to a prescribed packet out of plural packets P1...P7 every one or two photodetecting elements 11. Vertical scanning pulses (VSPs) phi1-1-phiV1-8, phiV2-1-phiV2-8, ...phiV7-1-phiV7-8 are supplied to a vertical transfer part 12 to transfer the signal charge to a horizontal transfer part 13. In this case, the starting and stopping positions of said VSPs are arranged respectively in the horizontal blanking period. The discontinuity of VSPs at the time of starting and stopping said VSPs exerts no influence upon a reproduced picture. Thereby, fixed pattern noise to be generated due to the discontinuity of VSPs can be removed.
