Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound of high purity in high yield, by oxidizing diisopropylnaphthalene with molecular oxygen in the presence of a polar organic compound and an aromatic hydrocarbon of indane and/or tetralin followed by acidolysis of the oxidation product. CONSTITUTION:Diisopropylnaphthalene is oxidized with molecular oxygen into diisopropylnaphthalene monohydroperoxide and the product is subjected to acidolysis to produce isopropylnaphthol which is used as a feedstock for synthetic resins, synthetic fibers, medicines, agrochemicals, dyes and so on. At this time, the oxidation reaction is carried out in the presence of (i) a polar organic compound, (ii) an aromatic hydrocarbon such as indane and/or tetralin, preferably tetralin, 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene, 9,10-dihydroanthracene to stop the oxidation at the stage of the intermediate thereby the yield and selectivity are increased to produce the subject compound in high yield and selectivity.
