Abstract
PURPOSE:To safely select the desired cells without receiving the influence of various bacteria in the external air by projecting laser light on a liquid suspension of the cells and discriminating the characteristics of the cells, then killing the cells by the laser light if the cells are not the desired cells. CONSTITUTION:The liquid suspension 2b of the cells and a sheath liquid 3 are injected into an inflow chamber 12a and the cells in the suspension 2b are admitted by each piece in an array shape into an orifice 12b. Fluorescence, forward scattered light and side scattered light are released from the cell when the laser light radiated from a laser oscillator 4 for measurement is projected on the above-mentioned cell. This light is detected by a photomultiplier 5 and the characteristic of the cell is discriminated by a control section 11b. The control section 11b compares the characteristics with preset reference values in accordance with the result of the discrimination and opens a shutter 14a of the laser oscillator 14 to project the laser light on said cell and to kill the same if the cell is not the cell to be selected. Only the desired cell is thus selected and recovered into a capturing device.
