Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a liquid-metal fast reactor having a fuel exchanging cycle of 10-30 years by reducing the neutron leakage from the reactor core as much as possible by adjusting the height/diameter ratio of the reactor core to 0.39-1 and lowering the linear heat rating of a fuel rod. CONSTITUTION: The fuel exchanging cycle of a liquid-metal fast reactor is elongated by lowering the linear heat rating of the reactor to about 1/3 and reducing the neutron loss of the reactor by reducing the surface area of the reactor core by increasing the volume of the reactor core volume, namely, the number or length of fuel rods. The reactor is designed so that the height/ diameter ratio of the reactor core can become nearly 1. The height/diameter ratio is set at 0.39, because the life cycle of the reactor core becomes shorter when the ratio exceeds a prescribed value. As a result, the fuel exchanging cycle becomes longer and the constitution, etc., of the storage facility also becomes simple. In addition, the safety of the reactor can be improved by operating the reactor at a low linear heat rating and the need of storing high-level wastes can be eliminated.
