Abstract
PURPOSE:To facilitate high-yield production of the title compound which is used as a feedstock for 3-vinylpyridine used in ion-exchange resins, by demethylation of 2-methyl-5-ethylpyridine in the presence of a Ni catalyst supported with zirconia in the presence of a specific amount of steam. CONSTITUTION:2-Methyl-5-ethylpyridine is brought into contact with a nickel catalyst supported with zirconia (the nickel content is 5-50wt.%) together with steam in an amount of 5-40mol. per mol. of the pyridine, at 250-450 deg.C, preferably 270-400 deg.C to effect selective demethylation in the alpha-position. In this process, 3-ethylpyridine is obtained in much higher yield than in the conventional process, as the high selectivity is maintained under such conditions as the ratio of the steam to the feedstock is remarkably reduced. The catalyst precipitates more reduced amount of carbon than the catalysts in which alumina or silica is used as a support and the catalyst life is reasonably prolonged.
