Abstract
PURPOSE:To make carbon fibers or a sheet-shaped material constituted of carbon fibers adhered to a press densified graphite layer with large adhesion strength for manufacturing a composite material by placing carbon fibers on the upper section of a bulky expanded graphite particle layer and then press densify the same. CONSTITUTION:Expanded graphite powder 1 is fed out on a belt 2 moving at a given speed, on which fabric-like carbon paper 3 is fed out continuously, and an expanded graphite layer 4 as a bottom layer and the carbon paper 3 placed on an upper layer are heated by a heater 12 and press densified by rollers 5. A densified composite sheet material 6 is wound by a winding roll 7. A composite carbon sheet thus manufactured is constituted of a layer purely composed of graphite at the bottom and contains richer carbon fibers as the layer comes closer to the surface. As the lower end of carbon fibers is buried in the press densified expanded graphite layer and entangled all together mechanically, bonding of said both materials is firm and strong, different from the bonding with a bonding agent. Also, the upper surface of the graphite sheet is made in the state that carbon fibers are arranged or hairy in various directions looking like velvet.
