Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve a high stability and reproducibility of measurement, by calculating a distance to an object to be measured on the theory of trigonmetrical survey based on a difference signal component between an electrical signal at the emission of a light emitting element and that at the extinction thereof. CONSTITUTION:A light irradiator 1 is provided to irradiate an object 6 to be measured with luminous flux of a switchable light emitting element 2 condensed into a fine beam and a light receiver 8 is provided to focus a beam 7 reflected scattering from the object 6 being measured on a position detecting element 10 in an optical system so that an electrical signal is outputted corresponding to the focal position. A distance to the object 6 being measured is calculated with an arithmetic processor 13 on the theory of trigonmetrical survey from a difference signal component between an electrical signal 11 of the position detecting element 10 during the emission and that during the extinction by switching of the light emitting element 2. This can remove measuring errors due to a dark current of the position detecting element 10, external stray light, a drift of an amplifier and the like.
