Abstract

PURPOSE:To purify exhaust gas effectively by performing feed-back control and open loop control while an air-fuel ratio sensor outputs rich signals and lean signals during the operation of a secondary air supply means respectively. CONSTITUTION:An internal combustion engine E is provided with a secondary air supply means A for supplying air in the exhaust passage 41 on the upper stream side of a three way catalyst 42 and air-fuel ratio sensor 43. This internal combustion engine E performs feedback control by an air-fuel ratio control means B so that the exhaust gas on the upper stream side of the three way catalyst 42 may be purified effectively by making the air-fuel ratio of said exhaust gas approach the theoretical air-fuel ratio by supplying secondary air. This air-fuel ratio control means B performs feedback control while the air-fuel ratio sensor 43 outputs rich signals during the operation of the secondary air supply means A, however, it performs open loop control while the air-fuel ratio sensor 43 outputs lean signals and does not perform such control as to make mixture dense. Thus, HC and CO in exhaust gas are restricted to increase for allowing the exhaust gas to be purified effectively.
