Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the resistance to wear and thermal shock of the title glass carrier roll by providing a specified inorg. colloid-impregnated layer on the surface of the roll in the roll obtained by press-fitting the doughnut forming plate consisting of a silica-alumina fiber on a metallic shaft. CONSTITUTION:The doughnut forming plate 2 consisting of a silica-alumina fiber contg. <=30% shot, an inorg. binder and an org. binder, and having >=0.5g/cm<3> bulk density is press-fitting on the metallic shaft 1 to produce a roll. The roll is then set and polished, the roll surface is impregnated with an inorg. colloidal soln., and the soln. is dried to form the inorg. colloid- impregnated layer 5. As a result, a double-layered glass carrier roll having an unimpregnated layer therein is obtained. A silica sol, an alumina sol, a zirconia soln, etc., are appropriately used as the inorg. colloidal soln.
