Abstract

PURPOSE:To advantageously obtain the titled compound from a mixture of isopropylnaphthalenes, by distilling away a fore-running so as to provide a specific amount of components having a higher boiling point than monoisopropylnaphthalene and lower boiling point than that of the titled compound, cooling and crystallizing or recrystallizing the titled compound. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of isopropylnaphthalenes containing 2,6- diisopropylnaphthalene (2,6-DIPN) is distilled and the distillation residual oil is cooled and crystallized or recrystallized to separate the 2,6-DIPN useful for producing polyethylene naphthalate fibers, etc., from the above-mentioned mixture. In the process, a fore-running is distilled away so that the amount of components having a lower boiling point than that of monoisopropylnaphthalene and higher boiling point than that of the 2,6-DIPN may be <=10%, preferably <=5% by the afore-mentioned distillation. Thereby the concentrated 2,6-DIPN fraction is recovered from the alkylation reaction product of naphthalene (the above-mentioned mixture) at a low equipment cost with hardly any quantity of utility.
