Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable high speed switching and high accuracy modulating operation by providing at least one electroacoustic transducer for electricity/ supersonic wave conversion on each of two mutually confronting faces of an acousto-optic medium. CONSTITUTION:At least one electroacoustic transducer for electricity/supersonic wave conversion is provided on each of two confronting faces of an acousto- optic medium 1. The transducer is composed of a piezoelectric body 2 and an adhesion layer 3. The electric signal of a high frequency power source 4 is transduced by the piezoelectric body 2 into a supersonic wave and propagated in the medium 1 as shown in the figure as arrow marks. The supersonic wave in the medium 1 generates periodical changes of refraction factor, and incident light 6 whose direction is at a certain angle to the propagating direction of the supersonic wave generates diffracted light 7 besides transmitted light 8. The transmitted light 8 receives resonance loss and switching operation can be enabled if sufficient resonance loss is given. Therefore, high speed switching operation and modulation operation of high accuracy are enabled.
