Abstract

PURPOSE:To mass-produce a preform for optical glass fiber excellent in homogeneity, with large dimension, and at low cost in comparison with a gaseous phase synthesizing method, by using a quartz-base glass pipe which can be intactly made to one part of the preform for optical fiber and has a bottom part as a vessel in the case of producing the preform for optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:In the case of producing a preform for optical fiber having a core part and a cladding part, the following method is used. In other words, a quartz-base glass pipe 1 having a bottom part is used as all parts or one part of the cladding part. The core part or one part (2 3) of the cladding part is formed inside of the quartz-base glass pipe 1. The formation of the above-mentioned core part or one part of the cladding part is performed by the following A or B. (A) Metallic alkoxide is introduced into the quartz-base glass pipe as the raw material of glass and hydrolyzed to allow it to gel and this gel is made to dry gel and thereafter this is heated and made transparent. (B) After packing quartz-base powder in the quartz-base glass pipe, it is heated and made transparent.
