Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable normal printing even after a prolonged inactive printing, without causing clogging and without the need for purging of an ink, by charging part of the space between a print head and a cap with a colorless liquid consisting mainly of water, said liquid having a vapor pressure almost the same as that of an ink. CONSTITUTION:A wetting liquid consists, for example, of water and a polyhydric alcohol, and its composition is adjusted such that it has a saturated water vapor pressure almost the same as that of an ink to be used for a printer. As the polyhydric alcohol, there may be employed glycerol, which is most suitable in that the wetting liquid prepared using glycerol can contain more water when in equilibrium with the atmospheric humidity, the viscosity thereof is so stable as not to increase easily, the feeding and recovery of the liquid is easy, and glycerol is well miscible with water. A space 3a between a cap 3 and a head 1 is connected to a wetting liquid tank 6 by a feeding pipe 7. The wetting liquid 4 is fed from the tank 6 through the feeding pipe 7 to the space 3a by means of the capillary phenomenon. Then, this wetting liquid 4 is recovered and sent to the tank 6 through a recovering pipe 10 by means of a pump 8.
