Abstract
PURPOSE:To efficiently execute a high speed processing even in case of multicolor image information, by outputting simultaneously a first output light beam consisting of a digital signal, and a light beam being proportional to the input light intensity when the input light beam is below a threshold level, and being proportional to the light intensity which has subtracted the threshold level from the input light intensity when the input light is the threshold level or above, based on the threshold level as a reference. CONSTITUTION:A non-linear optical element 12 has a prescribed threshold level, and when the intensity I of an input light is a threshold value It or below, said element outputs a light beam of the intensity I0 corresponding to a digital signal for signifying a digit '0' as a first output light T, and a light beam of the intensity IR0 being proportional to the intensity of the input light as a second output light R, respectively. Also, when the intensity I of the input light is the threshold level It or above, the light beam of the intensity I1 corresponding to a digital signal for signifying a digit '1', and the light beam of the intensity IR1 being proportional to the light intensity which has subtracted the threshold level from the input light intensity I are outputted as the first output light T, and the second output light R, respectively. In such a way, information extending from an input to an output is all processed by light and brought to A/D conversion. Thus, an optical A/D converter of high speed and high accuracy can be attained.
