PURPOSE:To shorten the access time of a magnetic head and to realize fast positioning, by arranging a second coil to enable a short-circuited or open- circuited state to be set by a switching circuit and to control the movement of a magnetic head on a carriage. CONSTITUTION:The carriage 8 holds the magnetic head 9 on one side and a bobbin 10 on the other side, and two coils 11a and 11b are wound across the bobbin 10, and it is positioned in the magnetic circuit of a VCM12. By permitting a current to flow on the coil 11a for driving to drive the magnetic head 9, and next, permitting the current to flow to stop the magnetic 9, a force in direction opposite to the moving direction of the magnetic head 9 is operated. At this time, a reaction force is generated by turning ON the switching circuit 18 and short-circuiting the coil 11b. The motion of the magnetic head 9 can be stopped suddenly. Also, for residual oscillation at a time from deceleration to stoppage, damping can be accelerated by short-circuiting the coil 11b, thereby, the access time can be shortened.
