Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a pulp having a large specific surface area and no decrease in retention even in high speed papermaking and excellent in whiteness by mixing an aqueous pulp slurry with urea and formaldehyde or the like and an acidic catalyst and keeping the resultant for a specified time without stirring. CONSTITUTION: This pulp is obtained by mixing an aqueous pulp slurry with urea and formaldehyde or an initial condensate of urea and formaldehyde and an acidic catalyst (sulfuric acid or formic acid) and keeping the resultant for >=15 min preferably 20-60 min and reacting substantially without stirring. It is preferable to use 0.8-1.6 mol formaldehyde based on 1 mol urea.
