Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily produce the titled compound useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, etc., at a low cost, by using 3,4,6-trifluorophthalic acid as a starting raw material and heat-treating the compound in a liquid medium at a temperature within a specific range, thereby selectively and exclusively decarbonating the carboxylic acid of the 2-position. CONSTITUTION:2,4,5-Trifluorobenzoic acid is produced by heat-treating 3,4,6- trifluorophthalic acid in a liquid medium (especially preferably water, aprotic polar organic solvent and/or a liquid medium containing a nitrogen-containing organic base free from N-H bond, e.g. tri-n-octylamine, triethylamine and xylene or dimethylformamide and N-methylpyrrolidine) at 80-250 deg.C, especially 105-140 deg.C. The product is useful as an intermediate raw material for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, photo-sensitive materials, functional polymers, etc.
