Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for synthetic polymers, coatings, etc., in high yield, by reacting methacrylic acid with an alcohol in the vapor phase in the presence of tantalic acid. CONSTITUTION:Methacrylic acid is reacted with a 1-8C alcohol in the presence of tantalic acid catalyst at 120-300 deg.C under atmospheric pressure or several hundreds of mmHg-10kg/cm<2>G pressure in an inert gas atmosphere, such as nitrogen or helium, to afford the aimed substance. The tantalic acid is obtained by hydrolyzing a halide (e.g. TaCl5) of pentavalent tantalum to provide tantalum hydroxide which is a precursor, washing the resultant tantalum hydroxide with an acid and/or water and heat-treating the washed substance. The methacrylic acid and alcohol are used at 1:50-5 molar ratio. Since the catalyst has high activity, this reaction is carried out at a low temperature with a long catalyst life and stable operation can be performed for a long period. Since the selectivity is high, steps of separating and recovering the ester can be simplified.
