Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase hardness of the ball contact part of a retainer, to prevent the drop of a ball, and reduce a cost, by a method wherein a stepped peripheral edge is formed on an oblong window, and in machining of the stepped peripheral edge, a press force is vertically exerted on a steel plate for retaining. CONSTITUTION:In mfr. of a retainer, an oblong window 13 is punched by means of a first punch 8. Subsequently, a surface press work is performed by means of a punch 17 having a shape in cross section slightly larger than the size of the oblong window 13 and formed with a vertical wall surface 17a. Since surface press is effected vertically to a retainer material 1, an excess thickness part 18 is simply squeezed in a finish direction as shown by an arrow mark. Since the excess thickness part is protruded in the oblong window 13 formed in a preceding process, a window forming work is effected again by means of the punch 8. In this way, a stepped part is formed at the peripheral edge of the oblong window 13 with a given size. Since, in formation of a stepped peripheral edge, a press force is vertically exerted on a steel plate for a retainer, work hardening occurs, hardness of the ball contact part of a retainer is increased, and reinforcing treatment is eliminated. Further, since a retainer with a specified groove width is provided, a ball 2 is prevented from a drop.
