Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the nonlinear optical constant of a titled material and element by using a specific carbazole compd. CONSTITUTION:The compd. expressed by the formula I is used as the org. nonlinear optical material. In the formula, R<1>, R<2> denote H, alkyl, aryl, etc.; R<2> denotes alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, etc. The compd. expressed by the formula can be synthesized by mixing aldehyde, etc., having a carbazole ring with a corresponding primary amine, subjecting the mixture to heating reflux using a desired acidic catalyst and removing the formed water. The nonlinear optical element is preferably the element constituted by forming a thin film consisting of the compd. expressed by the formula (e.g.: the compd. expressed by the formula II) in a light guide. The above-mentioned thin film is formable by a resistance heating vapor deposition, etc.
