Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in simple treatment and high purity and yield, by converting 5-amino-2,4,6-triiodoisophthalic acid to corresponding salt and then adding alcohols thereto and depositing crystal thereof in the presence of a strong acid. CONSTITUTION:5-Amino-2,4,6-triiodoisophthalic acid (AIPA) is converted to salt thereof with sodium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, etc. and alcohols such as methanol or ethanol corresponding to 5-60wt.% based on total water amount is added to the above-mentioned salt and the crystal of AIPA is deposited at pH adjusted to <=4 using a strong acid such as sulfuric acid at 20-60 deg.C to purify AIPA. AIPA is useful as an intermediate for Roentgen contrast medium having extremely low intravenous toxicity.
