Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a friction material for power transmission and braking for automobiles, excellent in terms of safety and hygiene of labor and public health, containing specific carbonaceous fibers and phosphate fibers as reinforcing fibers in a specific ratio. CONSTITUTION:(A) Carbonaceous fibers having 14-21wt.% bonded nitrogen content and 500-1,300g/d modulus of elasticity in tension is blended with (B) phosphate fibers in the ratio of 1.5<x+y<30.0, 0.05<x<29.0 and 1.0<y<20.0 [x is content (wt.%) of carbonaceous fibers based on friction material; y is content of phosphate fibers based on friction material] and further preferably (C) 0.5-10.0wt.% aramid fibers to give the aimed friction material which has safety because of absence of asbestos and reaches 0.30-0.45 coefficient of friction.
