Abstract

PURPOSE:To make it possible to selectively output two types of lights by providing an optical input means for selectively inputting a first or second light corresponding to a wavelength lambda0 or lambda1 into a semiconductor laser which has two oscillation modes of the wavelengths lambda0, lambda1. CONSTITUTION:There are provided a semiconductor laser 10 having two oscillation modes of wavelengths lambda0, lambda1, wherein, it a light substantially matching the wavelength of the other oscillation mode is externally inputted, when it is oscillating on one oscillation mode, the oscillation mode changes to the other oscillation mode and this mode is maintained, and an optical switch 20 which is an optical input means for selectively inputting a first light substantially corresponding to the wavelength lambda0 or a second light substantially corresponding to the wavelength lambda1 to the laser 10. With this set-up, by the light inputted to the semiconductor laser 10 having two oscillation modes of the wavelengths lambda0, lambda1, the wavelength of the output light of this laser can be changed to one of the two and maintained. Also, in this case, the semiconductor laser 10 exhibits the bistable properties of the wavelength and a large extinction ratio can be obtained for the bistable properties by the optical intensity.
