Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture a non-heattreated bar steel with high toughness, by specifying steel slab-heating temp. in hot rolling and also specifying rolling- finishing temp., rate of strain, and the total quantity of working in finish rolling, respectively, in a medium-carbon steel containing specific amounts of carbon. CONSTITUTION:At the time of applying hot rolling to a medium-carbon steel containing 0.2-0.6wt.% carbon, a steel slab is heated to 800-900 deg.C to undergo roughing and intermediate rolling. Subsequently, in a finishing mill train, finish rolling is applied under the conditions of 800-900 deg.C rolling-finishing temp., 1-50sec<-1> rate of strain, and >=50% cumulative quantity of working to form a fine austenitic structure with austenite grain size No.11 or above and free from ferrite. Since this structure hardly grows in the coruce of cooling from hot rolling to ferrite transformation, a fine-grain structure composed of fine and isometric ferrite-pearlite grains is obtained. By this method, the as-rolled bar steel combining superior toughness with high strength can be manufactured.
