Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain borosilicate glass for an optical element having a low refractive index and suitable for use as covering glass for a fiber plate by using high purity starting material for glass not essentially contg. K2O, Cl and F. CONSTITUTION:Highly purified silica powder not essentially contg. K2O, Cl and F is uniformly mixed with Al2O3, H3BO3, CaCO3, Ba(NO3)2, ZnCl2, SrCO3, MgO, Na2CO3, Li2CO3, La2O3, H3AsO3 and Sb2O3 so as to provide a compsn. consisting of, by weight, 60.0-75.0% SiO2, 3.0-8.0% Al2O3, 10.0-15.0% B2O3, 0.3-5.0% CaO, 1.0-5.0% BaO, 1.0-5.0% ZnO, 0.5-5.0% SrO, 0.3-5.0% MgO, 8.0-14.0% Na2O, 0-20% Li2O, 0-3.0% La2O3 and 0.1-1.0 As2O3+Sb2O3. The mixture is melted at about 1,400 deg.C for about 15hr in a crucible, defoamed and annealed to obtain the titled glass having <=1.52 refractive index and 60-75X10<-17>/ deg.C coefft. of thermal expansion in the temp. range of 30-380 deg.C.
