Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a producing intermediate for benzene sulfinic acid alkali metal salt advantageously on an industrial scale in high yield and purity, by oxidizing nitrophenylphenyl sulfides with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Compounds expressed by formula I (n is 1 or 2) are oxidized with H2O2 in a heterogeneous two phase based solvent in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. ammonium tungstate or sodium tungstate) selected from tungstate and molybdate and phase-transfer catalyst (e.g. chlorotetramethyl ammonium) to provide the aimed nitrophenylphenyl sulfones expressed by formula II. The above-mentioned two phase based solvent includes e.g. hexane, heptane or benzene. The above-mentioned method is preferably used in oxidizing nitrophenyl- phenyl sulfides produced as by-product and circulating the oxidized product as a raw material.
