Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent internal grain coarsening due to carburizing treatment after warm forging and also to improve strength and toughness, by combinedly adding and incorporating Ni or further Mo, together with prescribed amounts of Al, Nb, and N, in a case hardening steel for warm forging. CONSTITUTION:As a case-hardening steel for warm forging, a steel which has a composition consisting of, by weight, 0.10-0.30% C, <0.50% Si, 0.3-2.0% Mn, 0.10-0.70% Ni, 0.30-2.0% Cr, 0.015-0.05% Al, 0.01-0.10% Nb, 0.0040-0.0090% N, and the balance Fe or further containing 0.10-0.35% Mo is provided. The steel stock with the above composition is subjected to warm upset forging and then to carburizing treatment, e.g., at 930 deg.C for 3hr. The coarsening of internal crystalline grains does not occur and the grains are formed into graded fine grains of grain size No.6-10, by which the case- hardening steel for warm forging excellent in strength and toughness can be obtained.
