Abstract

PURPOSE:To facilitate the formation of a polyester resin having a narrow MW distribution, a low content of a higher-MW component and a lower-MW compo nent, by esterifying a polybasic acid with a polyalcohol at normal pressure in the presence of an inert solvent and a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A polyester resin is produced by using a polybasic acid, a polyalcohol and, optionally, a monobasic acid and/or a monoalcohol as reactants and conducting esterification at normal pressure in the presence of 30-150pts. wt., per 100pts.wt. reactants, inert solvent and an esterification catalyst. As the esterification catalyst, monobutyltin hydroxide is particularly desirable because of its large effect of accelerating the reaction and its low adverse effect exerted when it is added to a paint. p-Toluenesulfonic acid also can be used as a particularly desirable reaction catalyst because it can act as a curing catalyst in a paint composition.
