Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the objective compound in high efficiency, without separating intermediate product in each step, by carrying out the whole steps in the same water-soluble organic solvent in the production of the titled compound from phenol and sulfur chloride in 3 steps. CONSTITUTION:1,7-Di(4-hydroxyphenylthio)-3,5-dioxaheptane is produced by (1) reacting phenol with sulfur chloride, (2) reducing and decomposing the resultant bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) disulfide into 4-mercaptophenol in the presence of a reducing agent or a reduction catalyst and (3) reacting the reduction product with bis(2-haloethoxy)methane. In the above process, the whole steps are carried out in the same water-soluble organic solvent to enable the production of the objective compound without separating and purifying the intermediate products in each step. The reaction efficiency can be improved by this process.
