Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently and certainly perform the destruction or emulsification of the calculus or tissue in the body cavity, by generating non-uniform vibration by forming a piezoelectric element so that the thickness is not uniform and vibrating a vibration transmitting member in a direction other than the axial direction thereof. CONSTITUTION:An ultrasonic vibrator 1 is constituted by alternately laminating a plurality of piezoelectric elements 2 and electrodes 3 having a disc shape and the piezoelectric elements 2 have through-holes 2a bored in the center parts and are formed so as to become non-uniform in thickness. Therefore, when voltage is applied to the piezoelectric element 2, the vibration direction of the ultrasonic vibration generated in the ultrasonic vibrator 1 does not become only the axial direction thereof to gener ate no uniform vibration and the vibration in the direction oblique to the axial direc tion is also generated and, therefore, the leading end of a vibration transmitting mem ber 9 is also vibrated in the lateral direction crossing the axial direction at a right angle. As a result, the vibration transmitting member 9 imparts ultrasonic vibration to a calculus or tissue not only in the axial direction but also in the lateral direction and, therefore, the destruction or emulsification of the calculus or tissue can be performed efficiently.
