A torque sensor 11 is fixed to a portion of the shaft in the compartment. A motor 9 for assisting steering is disposed in an engine room. In this arrangement, the torque sensor 11 is not influenced by heat of an engine to improve detecting environment, so that the accuracy, reliability and durability can be improved. Furthermore, as the motor is disposed in the engine room, noise caused by operation can be reduced.
