Abstract

PURPOSE: To display an image whose color reproducibility is high and whose image quality is high by improving the color purity of each color by providing the filters of the three colors of a narrow band at the insides of the respective optical paths of red light, blue light and green light. CONSTITUTION: The white light of a light source 1 is made as parallel light by a lens 3, and the red light and the blue light are reflected by red and blue cruciform dichroic mirrors 5 and 6 and the green light is transmitted, and it is made incident on liquid crystal light valves 9R, 9B and 9G through the filters 8R, 8B and 8G of three primary colors. Signal voltage for each color is applied and the transmissivity of the light valve for each color is controlled so as to form an image for the each color, and it is synthesized by a dichroic prism 10 and is projected on a screen by the lens 13. The white balance of the image is easily controlled by making image display bright using the filter 8 of the narrow band and changing the transmissivity of the filter in accordance with the spectroscopic characteristics of the light source, and the color purity and saturation are enhanced, so that the reproducibility and expressivity of the color are improved.
