In the deceleration traveling, a shift-down pattern is determined from the detected values of a vehicle speed sensor 3 and a brake oil pressure sensor 4 and a gear change signal is outputted to a transmission 6. And, by judging a vehicle speed after carrying out gear change, when the vehicle speed is on a high speed side, a lock-up signal is outputted whereas, when it is on a low speed side, a lock-up removing signal is outputted. Thus, by regarding a brake oil pressure as the intention of a driver at the time of deceleration, a shift-down control is carried out as necessary to obtain engine brake. Thereby, a braking property can be improved without impairing the riding feeling of an automatic driving car.
