Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a semiconductor laser whose laser beam has a spectrum line width highly stable and extremely fine by forming the edge face of the cladding layer on the side of the reflecting edge face of an optical fiber into a conical surface. CONSTITUTION:The material of an optical fiber 6 is, for instance, a single mode optical fiber with a length about 20cm and its end of the side optically coupled with a semiconductor laser 1, i.e. the non-reflecting end 7, is formed into a semi-spherical shape to increase the degree of optical coupling with the semiconductor laser 1. At the end of the optical fiber 6 opposite to the non-reflecting edge face 7, i.e. the reflecting edge face, the end of the cladding layer 62 is formed into a conical surface 20 and further the edge face of the core 61 is formed into a semi-spherical surface 25 close to a flat surface. After the optical fiber 6 is fixed to fixing plates 9, the non-reflecting edge face 7 is positioned so as to closely face the edge face 1B of the semiconductor laser 1 and, after the position is so adjusted as to obtain the maximum degree of the optical coupling between the semiconductor laser 1 and the optical fiber 6, the rears of the fixing plates 9 are bonded to a base table 10 with adhesive.
