Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain ceramics at lower sintering temperature without the need of raw material crushing and sintering aid, by sintering rice hull ash as the raw material. CONSTITUTION:First, silicon carbide-silicon nitride powder is produced from the ashed product derived from heating rice hulls in an oxidative or inert gas stream. This powder as the raw material is then pressed and sintered to obtain the objective composite ceramics. The aluminum oxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, and iron oxide etc. contained in said ashed product are dispersed homogeneously into the network structure of silicon oxide, while the aluminum oxide etc. act as effective sintering aids. This raw material is active, thus enabling reduction in the sintering temperature of the ceramics.
