Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce an optically active mercapto compound, by treating a specific mercapto compound with a cultured microorganism capable of asymmetrically hydrolyzing the ester bond of the compound or with treated product of the microorganism. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are alkyl; n is 1 or 2) is treated with cultured microorganism capable of asymmetrically hydrolyzing the ester bond of the compound or with a treated product of the microorganism. The objective optically active mercapto compound of formula II (R is H or alkyl; C* is asymmetric carbon; R1 is alkyl; n is 1 or 2) is separated from the reaction mixture. The microorganism capable of asymmetrically hydrolyzing the ester bond of the above compound is e.g. microorganism belonging to Rhodotorula genus or Microbacterium genus.
