CONSTITUTION:Butadiene is continuously reacted with water in a solvent (preferably sulfolane) in the presence of a Pd catalyst while maintaining the molar ratio of butadiene/the titled substance in the reaction mixture >=0.6 (preferably >=0.8) to give the titled substance useful as a raw material for plasticizers and a raw material for hydrolysis-resistant polyester in high selectivity, at high reaction rate under a long-term stable condition without forming insoluble polymers. When the aimed substance is separated by extraction method, the amount of the Pd component eluted in the extractant is extremely small. Addition of a unidentate coordinating tertiary amine carbonate (e.g. trimethylamine), etc., having >=7pKa to the reaction system further improves yield.
