Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve durability of a catalyst and to reduce the cost of the catalyst by forming a coating layer consisting primarily of activated alumina on a thin Al layer formed on the surface of a monolithic carrier, and depositing catalytically active metal thereon. CONSTITUTION:A thin Al layer is formed on the surface of a monolithic carrier comprising stainless steel or heat resistant steel consisting primarily of iron as a base material. After forming a coating layer consisting primarily of activated alumina on said thin Al layer, the product is calcined at >= m.p. of Al, forming thus a coating layer for supporting catalyst metal. A catalyst for purifying waste gas is obtd. by depositing at least one kind of catalytically active metal on the coating layer for supporting the catalyst metal. By this method, the coating layer for supporting the catalyst metal is formed with good reproducibility, and the durability of the catalyst is improved, thus the cost of the catalyst is reduced.
