Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled copolymer for use, e.g. as a raw material for polyimide polymer which is outstanding in strength, processability and heat resistance, by reaction between diaminodiphenyl ether and/or nuclearly substituted benzidine and aromatic tetracarboxylic anhydride to prepare a prepolymer followed by polymerization. CONSTITUTION:First, a reaction is carried out between (A) a diamine component containing 10-90mol.%, based on the whole diamine component, of an aromatic diamine component, comprising, as the essential component, diaminodiphenyl ether and/or nuclearly substituted benzidine and (B) 40-99mol.%, based on the component A, of an aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride to prepare an acid anhydride- or amino group-terminated polyamic acid prepolymer of low molecular weight. Thence, a solution of this prepolymer is further incorporated with 90-10mol.%, based on the whole diamine component, of an aromatic diamine followed by incorporation of additional quantities of the aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride so that the total aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride be equimolar to the whole diamine component to carry out reaction, thus obtaining the objective copolymer.
