Abstract

PURPOSE:To directly and efficiently produce a high-quality castor oil fatty acid estolide from castor oil by the use of a lipase. CONSTITUTION:In the case of performing hydrolysis reaction of castor oil and estolide-formation reaction of a castor oil fatty acid in one step, 30-65wt.% of castor oil is dispersed in an aqueous solution of 2-15wt.% (based on the castor oil) of a lipase capable of hydrolyzing beta-site or a lipase having partial glyceride selectivity and the dispersion is reacted under stirring at 5-70 deg.C to form a castor oil fatty acid estolide in an estolide yield of >=90%. In the case of carrying out the above reactions in two steps, 100pts.wt. of castor oil is hydrolyzed with 0.01-15pts.wt. of a glyceride-hydrolyzing lipase, an oily component is removed from the hydrolyzed product, the oil is dispersed in an aqueous solution containing 0.005-15pts.wt. (based on 100pts.wt. of the oil) of a beta-site hydrolyzing lipase or a partial glyceride-hydrolyzing lipase and the reaction mixture is stirred to obtain an estolide.
