Abstract

PURPOSE:To ensure gas diffusion without relying on water repellency of polytetrafluoroethylene and to increase the utilization of a catalyst by arranging specific fibrous activated carbon in an electrode substrate. CONSTITUTION:Porous fibrous activated carbon 13 having 0.1mum craterlike pores 14 is arranged in a fuel electrode substrate 6 and an air electrode substrate 7. Noble metals 10 which form a catalyst by penetration adsorption, and reduction treatment are supported within each of the pores 14. The noble metals are densely supported without forming a catalyst layer. By the constitution using no polytetrafluoroethylene, large spaces surrounded by fibers 13 are formed in the substrates 6, 7, and they form sufficient gas diffusion passages without filled by phosphoric acid in a normal operating condition. Phosphoric acid penetrates into the pores 14 by capillary phenomenon, and reaction gas dissolved in the phosphoric acid reacts on the noble metals 10. Since the noble metals 10 are not covered with polytetrafluoroethylene, the utilization of the catalyst is increased.
