Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily produce the title silicon nitride sintered body having excellent fracture toughness at a relatively low temp. by molding Si3N4 powder and a sintering assistant, embedding the molded product in the filling powder consisting of Si3N4, Si2ON2, and C, and heating the product in a gaseous N2 atmosphere under specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:Si3N4 powder and a sintering assistant are molded. The purity of the Si3N4 is preferably controlled to >= about 98%, and the particle size to <= about 2mum. Al2O3, Y2O3, Ti, etc., are used as the sintering assistant. The molded product is embedded in the filling powder consisting of Si3N4, Si2ON2, and C, and then heat- treated. The weight ratio of the components in the filling powder is preferably adjusted to Si2ON2/(Si2ON2+Si3N4)=0.05-0.5 and C/(C+Si2ON2)=0.1-0.3. In the heat treatment, the molded product is firstly heated at 1100-1300 deg.C in the gaseous N2 atmosphere contg. 1-50vol.% CO and kept at higher than ordinary pressure. The heat treatment at 1X10<-3>-500Torr vacuum and the heat treatment at 5-30kg/cm<2> pressure are alternately repeated more than once at the temp. ranging from the maximum temp. of the heat treatment to 1500 deg.C. The product is then heat treated in the N2 atmosphere kept at 5-30kg/cm<2> pressure and at 1500-1800 deg.C, and a sintered body is obtained.
