Abstract

PURPOSE:To accurately measure the extent of the insulation deterioration of a cable line and the position of the deterioration section by applying a pulse signal to the conductor of a cable and measuring the transmission time wherein a pulse is reflected first in the cable line and returns. CONSTITUTION:The cable consists of the conductor 1, the metallic shield layer 2, and an insulating layer. The shield layer 2 is formed by winding, for example, a copper tape around the insulating layer and when the part of a point C is dipped in water and rusted, the overlap part of the copper tape is insulated and enters the same state with the coil. Here, when electric pulses are implanted in the cable at a near terminal A from a pulse generator 3, reflected pulses from the point C are observed by a waveform observing device 4 at time t2. On the other hand, the the length L1 of the normal cable and transmission time t1 of the reflected pulse from a far terminal B are measured previously, so that the position of the point C can be known from L2=(L1/t1).t2 and (L2=AC and L1=AB).
