The space formed between the circular outer wall and the circular inner wall includes a circular rotating hearth. In order to retain the heat generated within the furnace, these walls are relatively low so that the ceiling can be placed close to the hearth. Burners are installed on the inner and outer walls and the ceiling.

Because of the high temperatures involved (1300-23000F, 704-1260C), the screws are often water cooled. Gas is vented through a furnace tube located in the ceiling.

Corrosion and erosion caused by lead, zinc, tin, iron, nickel and chromium often damage the screws and render them useless after only 3 months or so. As with IN659, expensive materials such as KH alloy (20% Kkel, 20% chromium, and the rest iron) were not satisfactory.
