Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent water, ions, etc., in a filter from leaching into liquid crystal by forming a transparent insulating layer between a transparent conductive layer on a 2nd substrate and a 2nd oriented layer in the middle. CONSTITUTION:A figure shows the example of a high-contrast color liquid crystal display device wherein color filters vary corresponding to R, G, and B and a gap containing injected liquid crystal is different corresponding to R, G, and B. Then, ITO which is the transparent conductive layer 3 needs to have a projection and recess surface on filters 2a and 2b and a light shielding layer 17, so a sputtering method is employed and SiNx is formed as a transparent insulating layer 16. An RF magnetron sputtering device holds the temperature of a substrate below <=100 deg.C to form SiNx to 500-1,200A with 2.2W/cm<2> discharging electric power density in an atmosphere of Ar 20m Torr and N2 40m Torr, and oriented layers 4 and 12 use polyimide. Therefore, the generation probability of the short-circuiting between an electrode 9 or 10 and the transparent conductive layer 3 on the substrate 5 decreases.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION FIG. 3 shows a color liquid crystal display device comprising one transparent substrate having a thin film transistor 14 and a color filter 2 formed on the other transparent substrate 1. A voltage is applied between the transparent conductive layer 3 on the color filter 2 and the pattern electrode 11 on the substrate 5 to change the optical characteristics of the liquid crystal 130. The thin film transistor 14 includes a gate 6, an insulating layer 7, a semiconductor layer 8, a source 9, and a drain 1Q.

On the transparent conductive layer 3 and the patterned electrode 11 (the alignment layer 4
and 12 are formed. In a liquid crystal display device with this structure, the base 9 or the drain 1° of metal is connected to the substrate 5.
It peels off from the liquid crystal and comes into contact with the transparent conductive layer 3 on the color filter 2, so that no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal. Therefore, as shown in FIG. 4, after forming a thin film transistor 14 on a substrate 5, an insulating protective layer 15 was formed.

Problems to be Solved by the Invention Color filters used in color liquid crystal display devices are formed of organic films. Therefore, the transparent conductive layer 3 formed thereon cannot be formed at elevated temperatures, making it difficult to form a high-quality film. For this reason, Figures 3 and 4
In the conventional configuration shown in the figure, moisture and ionic components contained in the color filters were released into the liquid crystal, resulting in problems in terms of poor operation and shortened lifespan.

Means for Solving the Problems The present invention includes a first alignment layer on a first substrate having patterned electrodes, and a color filter, a transparent conductive layer, and a second alignment layer on a transparent second substrate. In a color liquid crystal display device in which layers are sequentially laminated and a liquid crystal is sandwiched between the first and second substrates, the transparent conductive layer on the second substrate and the second alignment layer are provided. A color liquid crystal display device characterized by having a transparent insulating layer formed in the middle.

Embodiment An embodiment of the present invention will be explained with reference to FIG. This is an example of a high-contrast color liquid crystal display device in which the height of the color filter changes corresponding to Ft, G, and H, so that the gaps in which liquid crystal is injected are different for R, G, and B. Since the transparent conductive layer 3 on the filters 21L, 2b and the light-speed barrier layer 17 must be formed on an uneven surface, the ITO layer was formed by sputtering. Furthermore, SiNx' was formed as a transparent insulating layer 16.

Effects of the Invention By interposing the transparent insulating layer as in the above embodiment, the probability of occurrence of a short circuit between the electrode 9 or 1o on the substrate 5 and the transparent conductive layer 3 was reduced to 1/6. Furthermore, the contrast as an image characteristic of the liquid crystal display has become 100 or more in terms of visibility. In addition, changes over time during actual operation of the device have also been reduced.
