Recently, there has been a demand for full-color recording with density gradation, from monochrome recording to color recording.
For this purpose, thermal transfer ink sheets and color identification methods are being developed and put into practical use.

In such color thermal transfer ink sheets, heat from a heating element such as a thermal head is applied from the sheet base side to melt the ink layer, and when the platen presses the transfer paper (recording paper), the desired color is formed. The melted ink layer is transferred to the paper, repeatedly for each color on the same paper in response to an information signal.

It is necessary to determine the color of the ink layer. A method for color discrimination (identification) of this ink layer is disclosed in, for example, Japanese Patent Laid-Open Nos. 58-140266 and 61
This method is proposed in Japanese Patent No.-11280. JP-A-58-1
Publication No. 40266 provides red, green, and blue light sources consisting of lamps and filters for color identification, and a photodetector (phototransistor) corresponding to each light source, and detects light transmitted through a thermal transfer ink sheet. The color of the monochromatic ink layer is determined using Furthermore, in JP-A No. 61-11280, monochromatic ink layers of different colors are coated on a transparent substrate at intervals to provide a transparent portion on a thermal transfer ink sheet. The color of the monochromatic ink layer can be determined by applying a non-transparent ink layer mark to the surface, irradiating light from a light emitting element (light source) to a light receiving element, and detecting the amount of light transmitted through the thermal transfer ink sheet. are doing.

It is composed of an ink layer 223 (made of wax and coloring material) 23b. The ink components are melted by heating by the thermal head, and the melted ink components are pressed from the capillary portions of the filler to the capillary portions of the recording paper fibers, and are permeated and transferred.

If the ink layer is composed of monochromatic ink layers (four types) of different colors using yellow, magenta, cyan, and black as the coloring materials in the ink components, full-color recording is possible in terms of gradations.

Further, when at least one of the sheet base material, intermediate adhesive layer, and ink layer of a color thermal transfer ink sheet is non-transparent, it cannot be distinguished by the above-mentioned color identification method using light transmission.

They are formed repeatedly in this order. When carbon black is used as a filler in the ink layer, the ink sheet portions of the yellow ink layer 4Y, magenta ink layer 4M, and cyan ink layer 4C are also black in color,
It neither transmits nor reflects light. The light reflective marks 5a to 5d are printed by a well-known printing technique such as a gravure coating method at positions corresponding to the boundaries between the monochromatic ink layers 4Y, 4M, 4C, and 48, and the color thereof is silver. is preferred. Then, in order to distinguish the beginning of one set of yellow, magenta, cyan, and black, the black ink layer 4
The light reflective mark 5a formed at the boundary between the yellow ink layer 4Y and the yellow ink layer 4Y has a different shape from the other marks 5b, 5c and 5d, and is printed over the entire width of the ink sheet in the width direction. When the color thermal transfer ink sheet 1 is moved in the direction of arrow A (FIGS. 1 and 2), the light reflective marks 5a to 5d are exposed to commercially available light-emitting/light-receiving elements 8 provided in the ink sheet feed section of the printer. Its presence is detected by (8A, 8B). The boundaries between the monochromatic ink layers 4Y, 4M, 4G, and 48 are determined by the detection signal of the light emitting/light receiving element 8B, and the boundaries between the monochromatic ink layers 4Y, 4M, 4G, and 48 are determined by combining the detection signals of the light emitting/light receiving element 8A. A magenta ink layer 4M, a cyan ink layer 4C, and a black ink layer 48 can be distinguished.

Furthermore, three types of monochromatic ink layers 4Y and 4 except for the black ink layer 48K are added.
The ink layer 4 may be composed of M and 4G.
